Lead With Vision & Integrity

Dedicated to transparent governance, economic growth, and stronger neighborhoods in Union. Together, we can build a brighter, more accountable future for our city.

Meet John Mefford

John Mefford has lived in the City of Union for more than 27 years and has served 10 terms on the Union City Commission. He first was elected to the commission in 2006.

He started a second career as a Chemistry Teacher at nationally-recognized Larry A. Ryle High School in Union in 2005 and retired after 19-years as a public educator. He served as a mentor to both students, teachers and staff and was selected to deliver the Commencement Address in 2018.

Prior to teach, John was a successful research chemist and worked in technical sales in the paper industry.

He has a Master's in Teaching from Northern Kentucky (2006) and a Bachelor's of Chemistry from NKU and Master's of Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati.

He and his wife Karen have been married almost 40 years and raised three sons, now adults, in the City of Union.

Fiscal Responsibility

Core Values

Every action I take prioritizes fiscal responsibility and open governance to serve all residents equitably. I am always conscious that this is taxpayer money and should be used with great care and accountability.

Transparency, integrity, and proactive community engagement. I believe city leadership should be directly accessible to citizens, fostering trust through regular open meetings and published budget reports. Once our new city building opens next year, our meetings will finally be able to be televised as well.
